Books and Bulldog Bonanza

A Message from our President:
We are now beginning our third week of the 2017-18 academic year, and it has been a whirlwind already. Last week, the college held its annual Bulldog Bonanza featuring local businesses and student organizations. The English Society’s table was a resplendent success resulting in almost 70 sign-ups requesting more information! The event coincided with National Read a Book Day (what a perfect coincidence). We began with an impressive collection of donated novels to give away; as we packed up fewer than 10 were left. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello, and on behalf of the English Society we hope you enjoy your reading. We also extend our gratitude to the volunteers who worked the table, and to all those who donated so many wonderful books. We couldn’t have done it without you.

As we look forward to the new year, I would like to highlight a few future events. Over the course of the semester we will be having some fun meetings, including a bonfire and Halloween party. Each week will feature something different, from a literary trivia night, to a few fundraisers such as a bake sale and used book sale. We will also have several speakers presenting over the course of the year covering topics regarding the international English honorary (Sigma Tau Delta), various careers related to English, as well as creative and professional writing workshops.
Over the course of each semester we will also host a book club. At the end of the semester we will watch a movie version of the selected work (with snacks, of course). For the Fall 2017 semester we will be reading Romeo & Juliet. Tying into this selection, our annual Shakespeare Festival this April will feature the same play, as well as a few other fun events.
(You can find a bunch of beautiful covers of Romeo and Juliet, including this one, here.)
